Diploma Conferral Policies of Graduate School of Engineering

   The Graduate School of Engineering is committed to the development of science and technology with an emphasis on disciplinary fundamentals and basic principles while harmonizing the natural environment.  At the same time we aim to assist students in their pursuit of rich education with specialized knowledge, as well as the ability for its creative application, while nurturing high ethical standards and sense of responsibility.  Master’s Program provides our students a wide range of knowledge and an international outlook, and aim to educate them to be technically sophisticated engineers and researchers who have the abilities to discover and resolve problems independently.   

   Under the above objectives of educating students, a master's degree in engineering will be awarded to students who complete the following requirements. 

   Eligibility for the master’s degree in engineering requires that candidates be enrolled for a designated number of years, complete a designated coursework established in accordance with the objectives of the Graduate School of Engineering, acquire a minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework, and pass a master’s thesis review and examination. 

   Completion of the Master’s Program is acknowledged based on the master’s thesis submitted by the master’s degree candidate with the academic significance, novelty, creativity, and applied value in the field of engineering and whether the master’s degree candidates have the ability to carry their research forward, and explain their research findings in theoretical terms, acquire the broad expertise to contribute to human welfare and sustainable development of global society through the manufacturing and system creation, and possess ethical standards and sense of responsibility in the academic field .

   Candidates that demonstrate exceptional progress in their studies and research will be eligible to complete the Master’s Program during a shortened period of enrollment.

Education Policies of the Graduate School of Engineering

   In order to achieve the objectives of diploma conferral policies, The Graduate School of Engineering performs its education in accordance with the following policies. 

1. Enable students to expand and advance the fundamental knowledge and research capabilities acquired through their undergraduate education and develop greater expertise.

2. Organize and implement a curriculum that allows students to learn across a variety of fields and develop well-rounded knowledge, and acquire the broad expertise to contribute to human welfare and sustainable development of global society through such as the manufacturing and system creation.

3. Through research-oriented education and training, cultivate students’ abilities of carrying their researches forward, with ethical standards and sense of responsibility and explaining their research findings and results logically, and nurture the abilities to discover and resolve problems independently.

4. Equip students with the ability to accurately identify their research position within the context of their research fields, discuss and debate their achievements in an international setting, and build the structures for collaboration as needed.

   In order to implement these education policies, in addition to its traditional Master’s Course Program, the Graduate School of Engineering offers a coordinated master’s and doctoral degree program (Integrated Master’s-Doctoral course Program) with the aim of cultivating engineers and researchers equipped with doctoral degrees. Both the traditional Master’s Course Program and the Integrated Master’s-Doctoral course Program include courses designed to deepen and advance academic knowledge in fields of the specialty (core courses/major courses), courses in areas other than the specialization offered with the aim of imparting broad-ranging knowledge (minor courses), and courses designed to foster practical abilities (on-the-research training, internships). International internships and classes conducted in an English language medium are also offered in order to foster international outlooks. 

   As for implementing the above education policies more effectively, the Graduate School of Engineering designs the annual allocation, the core/other subjects by considering the contents of each subject and its importance, and clarifies its systematics and structure using study handbook, course model and course tree. In addition, the study achievement of each class subject shall be evaluated by final examination, report, results of experiment/exercise, and grade on small-test or presentation during the class, and so on, and the contents of each class subject and evaluation methods of study achievement are indicated in study plan of each subject (syllabus).     

   Students are assigned to a laboratory in their field of specialization and work on a specific research project under the guidance of faculty members. At the start of the research, they decide on its purpose, contents and plan under  the sufficient discussion with their supervisors,  in proceeding the research, they discuss on its progress and changing plan regularly through opportunities such as seminar, group reading for thesis, group seminar, and they finally compile the results into a Master’s thesis, as well as completing a tailor-made curriculum that matches their abilities and career paths and is constructed by selecting from among the courses offered in their curricular program in consultation with their supervisors. Through these activities, students are able to develop the knowledge and skills envisaged by the education policies stated above.

   On a basis of the above education policies, in accordance with the diploma conferral policies, master’s thesis, in addition to the examination of its contents is evaluated through oral examination at master’s thesis presentation sessions and assessment of the candidate’s activities while undergoing research guidance (laboratory seminars, on-the-research training, internships, etc.)

   Some departments have established their own rules concerning matters such as screenings for progression in research guidance and interim reporting and review in relation to submission of theses.
