Prof. Tadeusz Slomka, President of AGH University of Science and Technology, Poland, went to the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University for a courtesy visit. He was accompanied by Vice President Miroslaw Karbowniczek and Prof. Janusz S. Szmyd.

AGH University of Science and Technology, located in Kraków, is the largest technical universities in terms of student population and total site area in Poland.  The university was established in 1919. At present, it has more than 2,000 faculty members and 34,000 students in its 16 faculties.

In 1987, Polish counterpart, Professor Szmyd was invited to the Department of Mechanical Engineering to launch the international relationship between AGH University and Kyoto University.  They had been enthusiastically engaged in collaborative academic activities such as, exchange of faculty members, joint research on thermal engineering and exchange of students for nearly 30 years to strengthen the working relationship of the two educational institutions.  Professor Hideo Yoshida in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics has been further promoting the activities.  Kyoto hosted a doctoral student from Kraków under a JSPS project this summer as part of the student exchange programs.

They recognized that exchanges among them were beneficial and productive.  Considering the outcome, they aimed to promote further exchange activities in the field of civil engineering from the individual level to inter-faculty level with the intention of promotion of academic exchange and enrichment of educational activities through joint research, the joint hosting of symposia, and exchanges of faculty members.  Therefore this visit was designed to propose to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen existing cooperation.

To begin with, the delegation came over to Professor Yoshida’s laboratory, and then Professor Koichi Eguchi’s laboratory in the Department of Energy and Hydrocarbon Chemistry, who are the counterparts of this exchange program.  They verified the progress of the ongoing joint research and exchanged views on the enhancement of educational services.

At the courtesy visit to the Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering, President Slomka extended his thanks to Dean Shinzaburo Ito for the collaborative project and fostering of young researchers in the field of engineering study.  Afterwards, the group, in the presence of other researchers, discussed mutual and specific interests for the purpose of promoting academic exchange.  They reached an agreement to create future official collaborative plans and formulate an MOU.

At present, there is no inter-faculty level MOU in Kyoto University.  The School will become the first faculty to sign an MOU with Poland.
