Kyoto University -Tsinghua University Symposium 2021 on Research and Education of Environmental Engineering and Memorandum Signing Ceremony on the Establishment of CRECET were successfully held. (2021.12.18)

On December 18, 2021, Kyoto University - Tsinghua University Symposium 2021 on Research and Education of Environmental Engineering (herein after the symposium) and Memorandum Signing Ceremony on the establishment of Kyoto University-Tsinghua University Cooperative Research and Education Center for Environmental Technology (CRECET) were successfully held by Graduate School of Engineering (GSE), Kyoto University and Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (TSIGS), with the support of Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (GSGES) and CRECET.

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic situation, the symposium was held online. Eighty-six participants, including faculty, staff and students of both the universities and staff from Chinese and Japanese environmental-related enterprises supporting CRECET, joined in this symposium and actively discussed. In this symposium, the Memorandum signing ceremony among the GSE, the GSGES of Kyoto University, and the TSIGS, China, was also held. After that, the current situation of international exchange and education in both universities was introduced. And then, researchers from both the universities presented their latest academic achievements, and Chinese and Japanese environmental companies also reported their latest technologies. In addition, the students of Kyoto University, Tsinghua University and University of Malaya joining the international exchange program (Wild & Wise Collaborative Learning Program) organized by Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University shared their experience this year.

For the Opening Session, Professor Xiaofeng Wu, CPC Committee Secretary of TSIGS, Professor Tetsuo Sawaragi, Dean of GSE, Kyoto University, and Dr. Morihiro Osada, Vice President of Council of CRECET(Nippon Steel Engineering Co. Ltd.,) provided their greeting speeches and extended thanks to everyone supporting the development of CRECET. The cooperation between China and Japan for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the establishment of carbon neutrality is essential and the international collaboration between Kyoto University and Tsinghua University will also be highly expected.

Next, the memorandum signing ceremony on the establishment of CRECET was held. The CRECET has achieved a great deal of success in the field of research and education in respect of Japan–China environmental technologies. Therefore, Professor Jiane Zuo, vice dean of TSIGS, Professor Tetsuo Sawaragi and Professor Takeshi Katsumi, Dean of GSGES, Kyoto University signed the memorandum for next three years.
And then professors of both the universities introduced international exchange and education activities at both the universities under the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Masaki Takaoka of Kyoto University introduced current situation of CRECET activities. Associate Professor Huan Li of Tsinghua University reported the Double-Degree program between GSGES and TSIGS and the progress of the program between GSE and TSIGS. Professor Sadahiko Itoh of Kyoto University introduced the change of Department of Environmental Engineering, Kyoto University and Professor Makoto Usami of Kyoto University also introduced the international exchange in GSGES under COVID-19 pandemic.

During the Academic and Research Exchange Session, Professor Taku Fujiwara, Associate Professor Kazuyuki Oshita, and Assistant Professor Bo Zhao of Kyoto University, Assistant Professor Yuxiong Huang and Assitant Professor Lin Lin of Tsinghua University introduced their latest research achievements and shared their ideas on the development of their research fields.

For the Industrial Session, Ms. Yuting Zhou from AECOM, Dr. Liang Zhang from Maezawa Industries Inc., Dr. Xiaolin Zheng from Shantou Hongdong Environmental Treatment Co., Ltd. and Mr. Tadahiro Moriyama from Hitachi Zosen Corporation reported the technologies or projects in their companies, respectively.
In the Student Session, Mr. Jacky Wong from Kyoto University, Ms. Li Ruohan from Tsinghua University, Ms. Chong Shin Yee from University of Malaya jointly reported Wild & Wise collaborative learning program and the outputs from their group works in the program.

Finally, Professor Takeshi Katsumi, Dean of GSGES, Kyoto University, delivered the closing speech, and this symposium was successfully concluded.
