MOU among two Kyoto university departments and the University of Brawijaya, Indonesia, made official by the visiting delegation (Sep. 29, 2014)

A delegation from the University of Brawijaya visited the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University to sign an MOU. The group was headed by Dr. Pitojo Tri Juwono, Dean of the Engineering Faculty, accompanied by Dr.A. Wahid Hasyim, Head of the Department of Regional and Urban Planning with his vice head, Asst. Prof.Ismu Rini Dwi Ari and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Surjono.

The University of Brawijaya located in Malang and established in 1963 is a state university in Indonesia. It is one of the prominent universities in the country, presently having more than 1,000 faculty members and 30,000 students in 14 faculties. It currently places top 50 among South-East Asian Colleges and ranks fifth among the universities in Indonesia according to Indonesian government standards.

Asst. Prof. Ari enrolled as a doctoral student in 2008 and graduated from the Graduate School of Engineering. She served as a liaison bridge between Kyoto University and the University of Brawijaya.

Since then, the research group of the Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering and the Department of Urban Management, Graduate School of Engineering, has engaged in collaborative academic activities and exchange student programs with the Department of Regional and Urban Planning, the University of Brawijaya. The faculty members of Kyoto University deliver lectures at the University of Brawijaya as well. The three departments concurred that exchanges among them were beneficial and productive.  Considering the outcome, they aimed to promote further exchange activities in the field of civil engineering from the individual level to inter-department level with the intention of globalizing research and education.  Consequently, they reached an agreement to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen existing cooperation.

To begin with, the delegation came over at Director Kiyoshi Kobayash’s laboratory in the Department of Urban Management, who is the counterpart of this exchange program.  They verified the progress of the ongoing joint research and exchanged views on the enhancement of educational services.

Following that, at the courtesy visit to Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering, Dr. Juwono extended his appreciation to Dean Shinzaburo Ito for the collaborative project and fostering of young researchers in the field of civil engineering which has been conducted for many years. Prof. Katsuaki Koike, Assoc. Prof. Kakuya Matsushima, Asst. Prof. Masamitsu Ohnishi joined in the meeting. They discussed mutual and specific interests for the purpose of promoting academic exchanges.

Thereafter the signing ceremony between Director Kobayashi and Dr. Hasyim took place in the office of C cluster. Director Makoto Kimura of the Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering was not present during the ceremony because of a business trip. However, it is officially confirmed that there will be future academic exchanges in the next five years among the two departments of Kyoto University and the Department of Regional and Urban Planning, the University of Brawijaya.
