The opening symposium for the "Re-Inventing Japanese University Project-International Program on Resilient Society Development under Changing Climate-" was held at Hotel Centnovum Kyoto, Japan.

In the first session, the Graduate School of Engineering's Vice-Dean Hiroyasu Ohtsu (professor and project leader) opened the symposium with a speech, which was followed by speech from honorary guest Prof. Masao Kitano, Vice-President of Kyoto University. In the second session, the outlines of the program were presented by Prof. Junji Kiyono (Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies), Prof. Tomoharu Hori (Disaster Prevention Research Institute), Prof. Yausuto Tachikawa (Graduate School of Engineering), Prof. Tomomi Yagi (Graduate School of Engineering), and Assoc. Prof. Izuru Saizen (Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies). In the third session, a panel discussion took place. A total of seven panelists from Kyoto University, Chulalongkorn University, Kasetsart University, Asian Institute of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and National Cheng Kung University discussed future directions from their respective positions, and had active discussions and honest exchanges of opinions. In conclusion, Prof. Mariko Mori, Director of International Education Administration Office gave a closing address, and the symposium completed with great success.

Attending the symposium were 60 people, including guests, from fifteen universities and seven countries participating in the program.
