On behalf of the Faculty School of Graduate School of Engineering, I would like to express heartfelt congratulations to our alumnus, Dr. Akira Yoshimoto, for winning the joint-Novel Prize in Chemistry this year.

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Instituet has just announced to award the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Dr. Akira Yoshino and two other scientists, Dr. John Goodenough and Dr. Stanley Whittingham, for their work in developing lithium-ion batteries.

Dr. Yoshino is an alumnus of Kyoto University who has graduated from the Faculty of Engineering in 1970, and from the Graduate School of Engineering of Kyoto University in 1972.  Dr. Yoshino was the Specially-Appointed Professor at our graduate school who is known for his prominent dedication to our education.

The invention of the award-winning Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries has already made a paramount contribution to creating various new products in industries that enriched our society.
The Nobel Prize acknowledges such outstanding commitment of research and promises an exciting future for its applications.

Once again, I would like to extend the warmest congratulations. I wish Dr. Yoshino good health and continued success in the future.
