The Memorandum signing ceremony among the Graduate School of Engineering, the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies of Kyoto University, and the Graduate School at Shenzhen, Tsinghua University, China, was held solemnly at the Graduate School at Shenzhen on Dec. 8, 2018.

The Graduate School of Engineering and the Graduate School at Shenzhen established the Kyoto University–Tsinghua University Cooperative Research and Education Center for Environmental Technology (the “Cooperative Center”) in October, 2005, under the umbrella of the “General Memorandum for Academic Cooperation and Exchange between Kyoto University and Tsinghua University” concluded in May, 1998, and in accordance with the “Memorandum on the Establishment of the Kyoto University–Tsinghua University Cooperative Research and Education Center for Environmental Technology” concluded in June, 2005.

The Cooperative Center has achieved a great deal of success in the field of research and education in respect of Japan–China environmental technologies, specifically after the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies joined in 2016, to extend the scope of activities. Therefore, the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies concluded the Memorandum as well.

After welcome speech by Prof. Kang Feiyu, Dean of Graduate School at Shenzhen, Tsinghua University at the signing ceremony, Masahiro Ohshima, Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering, expressed his great honor to participate in this occasion and thanked Tsinghua University to support of the Cooperative Center. In addition, the Cooperative Center was approved as one of the five on-site Laboratories by Kyoto University because its achievements were appreciated.  It will launch its activities from December 18, 2018.

The on-site Laboratory is a place established cooperatively with overseas universities and research institutes, where Kyoto university could act more efficiently than before by vigorously supporting overseas bases owned by its departments. That gives us an opportunity to promote advanced research leading the world, and to recruit excellent international students, strengthen cooperation with the industry.

The Cooperative Center has attained a greater support from both university headquarters and the Council because of its excellent research and educational achievements in the field of environmental science and technology.  Taking this opportunity, the Cooperative Center will take the next step forward.

Overall the signing ceremony marked a major milestone for these three Graduate Schools.
