Courtesy Visit by a delegation of Xi’an Jiaotong University (May 16, 2018)

A delegation of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), China, visited the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, on May 16, 2018.  The delegation was headed by Vice-President Mingzhe Rong.  He was accompanied by 14 respected people.

XJTU was established in 1921.  Currently, it has about 6,000 faculty members and 38,000 students in its 27 schools, 9 university colleges and 19 affiliated teaching hospitals.  XJTU is a famous leading institutes and on the List of World-class Universities.  Since the 1930s, XJTU has been referred to as "The MIT of the East."  XJTU appreciates an international collaborative relationship between institutes overseas and makes an endeavor to enrich exchange programs.

There is a long history of academic exchanges between the School and XJTU.  Even 30 years ago, several departments of the School concluded inter-department level Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with XJTU.  Kyoto University and XJTU commenced an MOU in February, 2008.  Under the umbrella of the comprehensive MOU, the School and XJTU have a steady development of cooperation in research and education.

The visit was designed to make an official appointment and recruit exceptional young researchers who could conduct research at XJTU.  The Alumni Association of XJTU in Kyoto held a talent recruitment fair on May 15 at the International Science Innovation Building at Yoshida Campus for the purpose of securing excellent talents from Kyoto University.  This is the first trial for XJTU.

At the courtesy visit to the Dean of the School, Vice President Mingzhe Rong dedicated his thanks to Dean Masahiro Ohshima for the collaborative project and fostering young researchers in the field of engineering study which has been conducted for years.  Prof. Hideo Ohkita, in charge of the Committee for International Academic Exchange, and Prof. Tomoaki Kunugi, Department of Nuclear Engineering, joined the meeting.  Afterwards, the group, in the presence of other researchers, discussed mutual and specific interests for the purpose of promoting further academic exchange.
