A briefing session of the St. Gallen Symposium was held (Nov. 27, 2014)

A briefing session of the St. Gallen Symposium was held at Katsura lounge, B-Cluster, the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, Katsura Campus on Nov. 27, 2014. The purpose was to encourage student participants.  There were about 20 students who attended the session.  This kind of session was held since 2009.

The St. Gallen Symposium is held in May every year at St. Gallen, Switzerland.  The 45th St. Gallen Symposium is scheduled to be held from May 7 to 8, 2015.  Top-level researchers from various fields including engineering are invited to this symposium as speakers. Therefore the symposium is highly reputed in the world and at the same time opens doors to students as leaders of tomorrow.  Participation will enable to give students rich and valuable experiences to brush up their research career.  Three students from our School were invited in the past.

We draw on the 40 minutes of the lunch break for the session.  First, Dr. Juha Mikael Lintuluoto, Lecturer of the Center for Global Leadership Engineering Education of the School, introduced Ms. Georgina Froelichsthal, Relationship Manager for Japan of the International Students’ Committee of St. Gallen Symposium.  She presented a brief overview of the symposium.  Then she explained the two ways to apply as a participant: global survey and essay competition.  A question and answer session followed and students asked many questions with great interest.

The followings are Ms. Froelichsthal’s advice about the essay competition:

1. Rest assured that your effort in writing an essay for the symposium will pay off when you qualify to attend the symposium.

2. You have to draw the attention of the reviewers to your unique and exceptional essay.

3. The competition is fierce among excellent students all over the world.  It is better for you to solicit some objective and creative advices from your colleagues after writing.  You should enthusiastically spend adequate hours to make it better.

4. There are alternative ways to participate besides the essay, such as video and multimedia presentation.

5. For further information, please go over awarded essays in the past.
