As an assistant professor at the Hydrology and Water Resources Research Laboratorya at Kyoto University, I am engaged in both research and education. My research focuses on land surface hydrological modeling and how it can be used to manage floods and water resources while taking climate change into account.
During my study in graduate course, the majority of my classmates intended to do job hunting because they wanted to work after graduation. I initially had the same perspective, but I also discovered that I really like doing research. Therefore, I consulted with my supervisor and other professors, and they all encouraged me to keep going and get my PhD. I made the decision to continue my studies in the doctoral program because I genuinely respected their advice. Since I intended to work in research, I realized that eventually obtaining a PhD degree would be crucial for that job and give me the opportunity to practice analythical thinking and problem-solving skills.
I strongly encourage you to continue your education in a doctoral program if you enjoy conducting research in your undergraduate or graduate courses. I believe that earning a PhD can enhance your future career, in terms of not only academic technical skills but also transferable skills to industry roles. However, I want to remind you that completing a PhD will require a lot of effort and energy, and as a result, there will be times when you may have a lot of worries and a lack of motivation. Please do not bear them alone if you are experiencing these feelings; instead, consider talking to your friends, families, supervisors etc., to ease your anxieties.
