Deviational Methods for Simulation of Phonon Transport

要旨

Heat tranfer in crystalline solids can be modeled by considering the transport of phonons, quasi-particles representing quantized energy states associated with lattice vibrations. In close analogy with the kinetic theory of gases, a kinetic description becomes particularly useful for mesoscopic scales that are comparable to the mean phonon mean free path but also sufficiently large to be intractable via molecular simulation. In this talk we will discuss Monte Carlo methods for solving the governing kinetic equation for such systems, namely the Boltzmann transport equation. Application of these methods to systems of current practical interest will also be presented.
