Use of Rare Materials

Prior deliberations by faculty members of the University are required if you wish to browse the rare materials held by Katsura Library.
Please refer to the following content and apply at least two months before the desired browsing date.

Digital Data

You can browse some rare materials in the digital archive provided by Kyoto University.

Notes

  • In principle, the copyright of image data stored in Kyoto University Rare Materials Digital Archive belongs to Kyoto University Katsura Library which owns the materials. No content, in whole or in part, may be distributed, modified, or reproduced without prior written permission.
  • If you wish to publish or broadcast image data from Kyoto University Rare Materials Digital Archive and a documentary film of the Great Kanto Earthquake, please refer to "Special-Use".

Application to Browse

Please submit the application form to Katsura Library counter or by email. (hours: weekdays 9:00 am-5:00 pm)

Upon receipt of the application form, faculty members of Kyoto University deliberate your request. The results will be notified by email.
Deliberations take time. Please note that we cannot provide a rush response. 

If your request is approved, we will send you the permit by mail or email at a later date.
Please bring the permission form and your ID (including faculty/staff ID, student ID, etc.) on the day of the visit.

Notes on Browsing

  • You may browse the materials in the Rare Books Reading Room or a space designated by staff
  • Available from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm on weekdays.
  • Bringing in luggage (including cell phones, smartphones, tablets, and other items with photography functions) is not allowed; please leave them in a locker.
  • You may only bring in & use black lead pencils. Do not use an eraser.
  • Materials may not be taken out of the library.
  • Please read "京都大学桂図書館貴重資料の指定及び取扱要項" (in Japanese) in advance.

Special-Use (Photocopy, Publish, Broadcast, Loan for Exhibition)
