Copying Services

For research and study, users may make photocopies of library materials to the extent Copyright Law permits. 

  • Photocopying is permitted only for research purposes.
  • Only one photocopy can be made per person.
  • Only a part of an entire work may be photocopied. 
    ※For works for which the copyright protection period (70 years after the author's death) has elapsed, an entire work may be photocopied. 
    • Books (monographs): Up to half of the entire work
    • Anthologies of short stories, collected papers, etc.: Half of each story, thesis, etc.
    • Journals, newspapers, etc.: If a considerable period has elapsed since publication, all of each article or thesis
      "Considerable period" means the period until the next issue is published. (For quarterly and annual journals, this means until three months have elapsed from the publication of the latest issue)

Self Service Photocopying

In principle, books and journals in reading rooms and stacks can be photocopied using copy machines in libraries.
When you use a copy machine, please fill out and submit the "Document Reproduction Application" next to a copy machine or at the counter.

Notes

  • Materials that may be damaged by photocopying, such as classical books cannot be photocopied by copy machines. Please refer to "Photocopying by Photography" below.
  • Photocopying of non-library materials, such as personal notebooks is not permitted. (Copyright Act, Article 31)

Katsura Library

One public expense copy machine and one private expense copy machine are located in the copy corner on the first floor.

Private Expense Copy Machine (Coin-operated Copy Machine)

  • Price: black & white 10 yen/printed side, color 50 yen/printed side
  • Payment Method: cash (10-500 coins or 1,000 yen bills)
    • You cannot use new 500 yen coins (issued in October 2021), new 1,000 yen bills (issued in July 2024), and CO-OP prepaid copy cards.
    • Currency exchange is unavailable.
  • Please ask Katsura B CO-OP shop if you would like a receipt.

Public Expense (Laboratory Budget)Copy Machine 

Copy cards issued by the Graduate School of Engineering may be used.
If you do not have a copy card, please obtain permission from the person responsible for the budget (head of the lab) and bring the completed "公費コピー機利用許可書" (application form for the use of public expense copy machine) (in Japanese) [PDF] to the counter.

  • Price: black & white 5 yen/printed side, color 10 yen/printed side
  • Please check the website for faculty and staff of the Graduate School of Engineering (on-campus only, in Japanese) for information on the issuance of copy cards and the timing of payment from the budget.
  • If you belong to a department other than the Graduate School of Engineering,  you need "京都大学文献複写利用書" to make photocopies at public expense. For details, please ask your library.

The North/South Libraries

One public expense copy machine is available in the reading room of each library.
If you wish to make photocopies at your private expense, please temporarily borrow materials and use the copy machines at Kyoto University CO-OP store or other locations.

Please note that copy cards owned by laboratories cannot be used.

Photocopying by Photography

An application is required when you wish to make photocopies of rare materials or classical books, or take photographs of materials for special reasons.
Please note that it usually takes about two months from the time of application until the copies are ready. 

Procedures are required to use photocopied materials for publication or broadcast, etc. Please refer to ”Special-Use” for details.

Procedures

1. Inquiry

Please inform us of the following information at the library counter or by email.
If you contact us by email, we will contact you back after confirmation.

  1. Purpose of use (photocopy/photography)
  2. The title, registration number, and other information to identify the materials
  3. Date you wish to obtain copies

2. Submitting the Application Form

Please submit the application form to Katsura Library counter or by email. (hours: weekdays 9:00 am-5:00 pm)

3. Deliberations and Notification of Result

Upon receipt of the application form, faculty members of Kyoto University deliberate your request. The results will be notified by email.
Deliberations take time. Please note that we cannot provide a rush response. 

If your request is approved, we will send you the permit by mail or email at a later date.

4. Provision of Photocopies

Upon receipt of the permit, the applicant needs to order the designated professional agency directly to make photocopies of materials.
