About Katsura Library

Katsura Library opened on Katsura Campus in April 2020. On Katsura Campus, researchers from various projects are engaged in education and research activities in addition to faculty and students from the Graduate School of Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering. Katsura campus is a research hub where original research and advanced, attractive education are practiced, and where creative, advanced science and technology are proposed to society in collaboration with industry. Katsura Library was welcomed with great anticipation as a "place of discovery and communication" and is now an indispensable part of the campus.
Furthermore, Katsura Library is expected to play a central role in the collection, preservation, and dissemination of the university's science and engineering materials and in disseminating the university's research results. Katsura Library is expected to play a major role in the university's function as a global innovation support hub with Kyoto University's science and technology, going beyond traditional library functions.

Purpose of Katsura Library Fund

This fund was established to improve and maintain the environment of Katsura Library so that it can fully demonstrate its functions not only on Katsura Campus but also within Kyoto University and contribute to research activities throughout the university.
We intend to use this fund to enhance the campus life of students, faculty, staff, and researchers, as well as to build an information hub with the local community and society and promote innovation through the enhancement of science and engineering archives and the promotion of active open science activities.

Fund Use Plans

This fund aims to enhance the collaborative environment for students and researchers at Katsura Library, enrich the library materials, and support young researchers who promote open science. The following specific activities are planned to use this fund.

  • Restoration and digitization of rare materials (support for education and research)
Katsura Library holds many valuable materials that the Graduate School of Engineering has collected for education and research since the university's founding. These materials will be properly restored and passed on to future generations. In addition, through digitization, we will make these valuable materials available to the public so that anybody can easily access them.
  • Environmental enhancement (e.g., additional bookshelves) (support for environmental enhancement)
To accommodate the ever-increasing number of library materials, and to fulfill our role as the university's archival library for scientific materials, we will install additional bookshelves in the stack rooms.
  • Support for implementing projects (support for young researchers)
We provide support for research dissemination projects utilizing Katsura Library. We welcome applications from Kyoto University researchers for creative projects like exhibitions, lectures, etc. (Number of applications in FY2024: 2)

Outcomes of Fund Utilization (through FY2023)

We have utilized the fund through FY2023 as follows. We deeply appreciate your support.

  • Maintenance of the Nagao Collection (FY2021)
The Katsura Library Fund was used to install a nameplate and panels to introduce the origin and contents of the Nagao Collection, which consists of approximately 5,000 items donated by the late Professor Emeritus Makoto Nagao. They provide users with information about this collection's significance and promote its utilization. Since many of Katsura Library's holdings are in the engineering field, the materials from the Nagao Collection serve as valuable resources for users seeking a broad education.
  • Exhibition at Katsura Library (FY2023)
The "Voice of Earth" design committee exhibition was held at Katsura Library in FY2023 as a project funded by the Katsura Library to disseminate research results. This was a traveling exhibition organized by the "Voice of Earth" design committee of the Architectural Institute of Japan, initially hosted at the Architectural Hall, Tamachi, Tokyo in April 2023. The Katsura Library Fund adopted the application of Dr. Yosuke Komiyama, Lecturer, Graduate School of Engineering, and held the exhibition. At Katsura Library,  the venue of this exhibition, the exhibition introduced attempts to take a broader view of serious environmental issues and to reconstruct architectural studies from ecological perspectives. Many visitors from outside the university came to the exhibition, and it was a significant opportunity for them to get to know Katsura Library as well as the exhibition. The Katsura Library Fund is currently accepting applications for projects aimed at disseminating research results in FY 2024.
